Sourced from Rajasthan, these highly decorative peacock sculptures started life circa 1850. Their original purpose has been the subject of much speculation here at Lacewing Interiors. Probably our best guess is that they were the front legs of a day bed, perhaps from a Royal Palace or Grand Haveli? Indeed, if you look at. You can see the fixing holes into which a joining lintel may well have slotted into? But your guess is as good is ours, and worthy of further speculation. What isn’t in question is the quality of workmanship. These have been lovingly carved in the tropical hardwood teak, by a highly competent hand, and though they have inevitably suffered a little damage down the years, their original integrity shines through. Remants remain of a painted pale mustard finish from a previous incarnation. Both have been set into later oak stands, and re-purposed as table lamps.
